Over and over Sunday, the men who played for Dean Smith and coached against him said essentially the same thing: The former coach at North Carolina didn’t command respect, he humbly earned it.Smith, who died Sunday three weeks shy of his 84th birthday, had faded from the college basketball scene since retiring in 1997 and as his health failed the last few years. He was a quiet coach, a man who, after winning his first national championship in a victory over Georgetown, walked over to Hoyas Coach John Thompson rather than rejoicing, as John Thompson recalled. When he became the winningest coach in the history of college basketball in 1997, his reaction was similarly self-aware and self-effacing. He sprinted to the locker room as the crowd chanted, “Dean, Dean” rather than bask in the moment. “He didn’t want the acclaim,” John Kilgo, author of his biography, told ESPN.
